“Young man, sit down. When God pleases to convert the heathen, he’ll do it without consulting you or me.”

Those were the words hurled at William Carey when Carey kept urging his fellow pastors to set up a missionary agency. In 1792, he wrote one of the most influential books in all of the history of Christianity: “An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens.” William Carey singlehandedly inspired thousands of otherwise indifferent Christians to get involved in the worldwide gospel mission.

At the inaugural meeting of his mission agency, Carey preached a sermon with the call, “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!” Within a year, he was on a ship headed for India.

We might not be like Carey heading overseas to bring the gospel to new grounds. However, our heart for the lost must not be different from his. After all, that’s the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ! So what are we going to do? Are we going to sit down and do nothing? Or are we going to get our hands dirty? Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!
