Why are we here? What’s the purpose of life? To end up with the most and best toys? Be famous? Fulfilled? Live the dream? It’s the question that has challenged every thoughtful human who has ever walked the planet. And so it should. Life with no purpose is drudgery (It’s hard enough when you do have a purpose!)
For those who follow Jesus, God has made it pretty clear why he has left us here on planet earth. It’s to proclaim the excellencies of Jesus, the one who brought us out of darkness into his marvellous light (1 Peter 2:9).
What an exciting purpose! To be on the team of the one who loved us so much that He gave up his perfect life to deal with our imperfection, to die the death that we deserve, so that we might have the life we don’t deserve. There are so many excellent things about who He is and what He has done that it’s not a difficult task to proclaim his excellencies. Let’s keep on lining up all that we do and say and think with this great purpose.
It’s a privilege and a blessing today to be setting apart Pastor Lau to serve the Mandarin congregation that will be launched next Sunday. This will give us further opportunities to proclaim the excellencies of Jesus, particularly to the 17% of our neighbourhood who speak Mandarin in the home. Please pray for him and Sharon and the team that will begin the work – that as Jesus is proclaimed people will respond and follow him.
